1″ and  1 1/2″ Gravel – Rock – Minus

1 ” Fractured (crushed) rocks or possibly crushed stone (aggregates) with a subtle tone of blue, gray, brown, red and ivory. Manufactured to specific sizes. Can be used for landscaping, driveways, and other common decorative rock – stone (gravel) purposes.

Standard crushed rock / stone is the kind of gravel that you are most likely to be familiar with, or envision in your mind when you first think of a crushed rock / stone driveway. This type of material has been pulverized from limestone, trap rock, gneiss or granite, depending on the quarry in which it was harvested and manufactured. When surfacing a residential driveway, homeowners will typically choose to work with crushed rock / stone that’s 1″ in size. At this size, the driveway is safe to drive upon, comfortable to walk over, and the stones are heavy enough that they will remain in place.

1 1/2″ crushed rock with ‘minus,’ which is the fine from the crushing process, will pack in and stay in place while driving or walking on. A clean crushed rock will not pack in and will always stay a bit loose and shift as you drive or walk on it. Clean crushed options typically look nicer and are better in muddy situations as they will work down into the mud to firm things up.

Now that you know which types of aggregate materials are required for the construction of a crushed stone driveway, it’s time to start thinking about which types of stone are correct for your project needs.

When it comes to the base and sub-base, you’ll find that you can successfully complete your project with standard crushed stone ranging from 1 1/2″-2 1/2″ in size, sometimes mixed with stone dust or stone fines. Some homeowners will also consider using quarry process (QP) for a base layer.
